At about 13km inland, Wilson feels the Fremantle Doctor as a late-afternoon easing rather than an early-afternoon change. That matters: your roof peaks before the breeze gets here, which is exactly the gap a solar vent fills.

Drive around Wilson and you are mostly looking at 1970s brick and tile on generous blocks. Large ground-floor footprints are the defining feature of this era, and ceiling area is what drives unit count — a sprawling four-bedroom home from the seventies frequently needs four units where a compact modern two-storey needs two.

Generous eaves are the compensation. Intake is rarely the constraint on these houses, so the extraction you fit is the extraction you get the benefit of.

Wilson is the part of Perth where this question actually has two defensible answers. The breeze gets here, but late — so a turbine does real work from mid-afternoon and very little before it, which is unfortunately when the roof does most of its heating.

Sun on the panel means the fan is running from mid-morning, so the heat gets pulled out as it builds instead of after it has already soaked into your ceiling. At $750 it costs more up front than a turbine, and on most Wilson roofs it does noticeably more.
