Whirlybirds and Solar Vents in Dianella

Dianella sits about 9km back from the coast. The sea breeze does reach here — it just reaches here after the worst of the day's heat has already built up in your roof, which is the crux of the whirlybird-versus-solar decision locally.

Most of what Dave works on in Dianella is 1970s brick and tile on generous blocks. The 1970s brick-and-tile stock here sits on big blocks with correspondingly large single-storey footprints — a lot of ceiling area under one continuous roof. That is the classic case for three or four whirlybirds rather than two.

The good news is that eaves from this era are usually generous and genuinely vented, so intake air is rarely the bottleneck. Tile flashing is straightforward, and installs go quickly.

Inland — late afternoon breeze

Dianella is the part of Perth where this question actually has two defensible answers. The breeze gets here, but late — so a turbine does real work from mid-afternoon and very little before it, which is unfortunately when the roof does most of its heating.

Solar changes the timing rather than just the volume. Sun on the panel means the fan is running from mid-morning, so the heat gets pulled out as it builds instead of after it has already soaked into your ceiling. At $750 it costs more up front than a turbine, and on most Dianella roofs it does noticeably more.

For a smaller home with decent eave venting, three turbines at $950 is still a perfectly reasonable answer. Dave will give you the cheaper recommendation when it is the right one.
