Cooling Noranda Roofs — What Actually Works

With about 11km between Noranda and the ocean, the afternoon change has lost a good deal of its strength by the time it arrives, and it arrives late. Worth knowing before you decide between wind-driven and powered ventilation.

Noranda is largely 1970s brick and tile on generous blocks. Seventies homes are the bread and butter of this trade: broad single-storey footprints, tile roofs at a workable pitch, and enough ceiling area that two units almost never cuts it.

They also tend to be the easiest to get right, because the eaves are wide and properly vented. When intake is not the limiting factor, adding extraction produces the result you actually expect.

A solar vent runs on sunlight instead, so it is at full output precisely when the roof is hottest. One unit at $750 typically moves more air than three turbines at $950, and it does not care whether the wind is blowing.

That said, plenty of Noranda homes do perfectly well on whirlybirds alone — particularly smaller single-storey places with well-vented eaves. A common middle path here is one solar vent doing the heavy lifting plus a couple of turbines contributing whenever the breeze is up.
