Ballajura sits about 14km from the coast, so the sea breeze arrives later in the afternoon and with noticeably less punch than it has closer to the water. Turbines still contribute, but there is a hot, still window through the middle of the day where they do very little.

Housing through Ballajura is dominated by 1990s brick and tile, much of it double storey. Two-storey construction became common in the nineties, and it changes where the problem shows up: the ground floor is usually fine while the upstairs bedrooms are unbearable by evening, because they sit directly beneath the roof.

Complex rooflines are the other feature — hips, valleys and separate roof sections that do not share air. A single cavity it is not, so units often need to go on more than one section to cover the whole house.

Ballajura is the part of Perth where this question actually has two defensible answers. The breeze gets here, but late — so a turbine does real work from mid-afternoon and very little before it, which is unfortunately when the roof does most of its heating.

Solar changes the timing rather than just the volume. Sun on the panel means the fan is running from mid-morning, so the heat gets pulled out as it builds instead of after it has already soaked into your ceiling. At $750 it costs more up front than a turbine, and on most Ballajura roofs it does noticeably more.

For a smaller home with decent eave venting, three turbines at $950 is still a perfectly reasonable answer. Dave will give you the cheaper recommendation when it is the right one.
