Whirlybird Installation Perth — From $350

Wind-driven roof ventilators that spin whenever the breeze is up — no power, no running costs. They flush superheated air out of your roof cavity and cut your summer cooling bills.

Enquire Now › How It Works ›

A whirlybird is the cheapest, simplest way to get heat out of a Perth roof cavity. There is no wiring, no running cost and nothing to maintain — the turbine spins on the breeze and pulls hot air out of the roof space continuously.

Dave supplies and installs quality whirlybirds across the entire Perth metro from $350 per unit, fitted, flashed and cleaned up. You get a fixed price up front before he books the job.

What Is a Whirlybird and How Does It Work?

A whirlybird — properly called a wind-driven turbine ventilator — is a rotating vented dome mounted on the ridge or upper slope of your roof. As wind passes over the curved vanes the turbine spins, and the spinning creates a low-pressure zone that draws air up out of the roof cavity.

That extracted air has to be replaced, so cooler outside air is pulled in through your eave vents. The result is a continuous flow of air through the roof space rather than a sealed oven sitting above your ceiling.

Because it runs entirely on wind, a whirlybird has no electricity cost, no switch and no maintenance schedule. A good unit will run for well over a decade before the bearings start to complain.

Benefits of Whirlybird Installation in Perth

What Perth homeowners actually notice after installation:

  • Roof cavity temperatures drop sharply — often by 15–20°C on a hot afternoon
  • Bedrooms and upstairs rooms stop holding heat into the evening
  • Air conditioners cycle less and cost less to run through summer
  • Winter moisture and condensation in the roof space is vented out, reducing mould risk
  • Insulation and roof timbers last longer without constant heat cycling
  • Zero running cost — nothing to plug in, nothing to switch on

Whirlybird Installation on Perth Tile Roofs

Tiled roofs are the most common in Perth, and they are straightforward to fit. Dave lifts and cuts the tile to suit, fits a purpose-made tile flashing under the surrounding tiles so water is shed over the top of it, and seats the whirlybird base on the flashing.

Done properly there is no silicone holding back water — the flashing does the work, exactly like the tiles around it. Silicone alone is the number one cause of leaking whirlybirds, and it is why Dave never relies on it.

Whirlybird Installation on Metal and Colorbond Roofs

Metal and Colorbond roofs use a soaker or a purpose-made metal flashing that is fitted under the upper sheet and over the lower one, sealed with a compatible roofing sealant and fastened with matching screws and neoprene washers.

On low-pitch Colorbond, unit placement matters more than on tile: Dave positions units high on the slope, clear of ridge caps and away from solar panels, so the turbine gets clean air and the flashing sits on a flat run of sheet.

How Many Whirlybirds Does My Perth Home Need?

The working rule is roughly one 300mm whirlybird per 50–60m² of ceiling area. A typical 200m² four-bedroom home therefore wants about four units; a smaller 120m² home is usually well served by two.

That number moves with roof pitch (steeper roofs hold more air), roof colour (dark Colorbond runs hotter), and how much intake venting you have. Homes with boxed-in eaves or no eave vents at all can bottleneck: without intake, extra whirlybirds have nothing to pull through. Dave checks that before quoting rather than just selling you more units.

FAQ

Whirlybird Installation Perth — Questions

Common Questions

From $350 for a single unit supplied and installed. Two units are $650, three are $950, and each additional unit is $300. That is a fixed price including travel, flashing and clean-up.

A typical 2–4 unit install takes 1–2 hours. You do not need to be home, though most people are — Dave will talk you through placement before he starts.

As high on the roof as practical — near the ridge, on the side that gets the most wind exposure, and spread across the roof rather than clustered. On most Perth homes that means the western or south-western slope so they catch the afternoon sea breeze.

A correctly installed, quality unit is close to silent. The squealing people associate with whirlybirds comes from worn bearings in old units — that is a sign it needs replacing, not a normal state.

Yes, and they earn their keep differently. In winter they vent the moist air that rises into the roof cavity from inside the house, which is what causes condensation, damp insulation and mould on the underside of the sarking.
