Whirlybirds and Solar Vents in Cottesloe
Dave's Whirly Birds covers Cottesloe 6011 and the surrounding Town of Cottesloe area. Cottesloe sits about 11km south-west of the Perth CBD, and every job here is quoted at a fixed price up front and completed by Dave personally.
Sitting barely a kilometre from the coastline, Cottesloe is squarely inside the belt where the Fremantle Doctor is at its strongest. For roof ventilation that matters enormously: the wind peaks in the afternoon, which is the same window your roof cavity peaks.
The roof stock in Cottesloe is mainly character homes with steep tiled roofs. Character housing brings a big, steeply pitched roof cavity — which holds a lot of hot air, and stratifies it hard up under the ridge. That is good news for ventilation: there is plenty to extract, and units placed high do real work.
The catch on older homes is intake. Original eaves were often narrow, and a lot have since been lined or boxed in during renovations, which quietly seals off the airflow path. Extraction without intake achieves very little, so this is the first thing to check.
The usual answer in Cottesloe is 4 whirlybirds, $1,250 all up. A steep character roof holds a lot more hot air than the floor area suggests.

What Dave Usually Recommends in Cottesloe
Nine times out of ten in Cottesloe the answer is turbines, and the reason is simply economics: when the wind is this reliable, a $350 unit does the job a $750 unit would do, and you can fit three of them for less than two solar vents.
What Dave will not skimp on here is the unit itself. Salt air eats cheap roof vents from the bearing outward, and a seized turbine moves no more air than a hole in the roof with a lid on it. Spending a little more on the hardware is the whole difference between a fifteen-year unit and an eight-year one this close to the water.
Exceptions do exist — very large homes, or roofs shaded by neighbouring two-storey builds — where a solar vent earns its extra cost. Those get flagged before quoting rather than sold by default.

FAQ
Whirlybird Installation Cottesloe — Common Questions
From $350 for a single unit supplied and installed. Two units are $650, three are $950, and each unit after that adds $300. Travel to Cottesloe 6011 is included and there is no call-out fee.
Steep pitch means more cavity volume per square metre of ceiling, so these homes often want one more unit than the floor area alone suggests. The general rule is one 300mm unit per 50–60m² of ceiling area, adjusted for pitch and how much intake venting the eaves provide. Dave works out the exact number from your details before quoting.
Yes — replacements start from $350 per unit. That covers removing the old roof vent, fitting new flashing, installing the new unit and taking the old one away. Most swaps reuse the existing roof penetration, so they take about 30–45 minutes each.
Same-week bookings are usually available in Cottesloe. Send an enquiry through the form and Dave will confirm the next slot along with a fixed price.
Yes. Cottesloe is roughly 11km south-west of the CBD, comfortably inside the area Dave covers, and travel is included in the quoted price — a quote in Cottesloe costs the same as one anywhere else in the metro.
Not if it is flashed properly. The flashing keeps water out, not the sealant — a unit bedded in silicone will eventually let go. Dave fits new flashing suited to your roof type on every install, which is the difference between a dry ceiling and a callback.
