Whirlybirds and Solar Vents in Mount Hawthorn
Dave's Whirly Birds covers Mount Hawthorn 6016 and the surrounding City of Vincent area. Mount Hawthorn sits about 4km north-west of the Perth CBD, and every job here is quoted at a fixed price up front and completed by Dave personally.
At about 7km inland, Mount Hawthorn feels the Fremantle Doctor as a late-afternoon easing rather than an early-afternoon change. That matters: your roof peaks before the breeze gets here, which is exactly the gap a solar vent fills.
Housing through Mount Hawthorn is dominated by character homes with steep tiled roofs. Steep old rooflines mean deep cavities, and deep cavities stratify: the air directly under the ridge can be ten degrees hotter than the air near the eaves. Units mounted high capture that layer, which is why placement matters more on these homes than on a flat modern roof.
Renovations are the complication. Boxed-in eaves, new lined soffits and enclosed verandah returns all cut off the intake path that the house was originally designed around. Getting air in is frequently the cheaper half of the fix.
For a typical Mount Hawthorn home you're looking at 4 whirlybirds — $1,250, installed in one visit. A steep character roof holds a lot more hot air than the floor area suggests.

Inland — late afternoon breeze
The Honest Recommendation for Mount Hawthorn
Being straight about it: wind-driven whirlybirds under-deliver in Mount Hawthorn compared with what they do on the coast. Not uselessly — but the still window through the middle of a hot day is real, and it is the window that matters most.
Where the budget allows, a solar vent is the better tool here. It runs off the sun rather than the wind, which out this way is the far more dependable of the two, and a single unit at $750 often replaces three or four turbines.
Mixing the two is common and works well: one solar vent as the workhorse, a couple of turbines to keep pulling once the afternoon breeze finally shows up. Dave quotes whichever combination actually suits the roof.

FAQ
Whirlybird Installation Mount Hawthorn — Common Questions
From $350 for a single unit supplied and installed. Two units are $650, three are $950, and each unit after that adds $300. Travel to Mount Hawthorn 6016 is included and there is no call-out fee.
Steep pitch means more cavity volume per square metre of ceiling, so these homes often want one more unit than the floor area alone suggests. The general rule is one 300mm unit per 50–60m² of ceiling area, adjusted for pitch and how much intake venting the eaves provide. Dave works out the exact number from your details before quoting.
The unit, correct flashing for your roof type, cutting and fitting, removal and disposal of any old unit, full clean-up including metal swarf off the roof and out of the gutters, and travel to Mount Hawthorn. Nothing gets added afterwards.
Yes, and it is the benefit people forget. Warm moist air from inside the house rises into the roof cavity and condenses on cold surfaces overnight — that is where damp insulation and mould on the sarking come from. The same airflow that removes summer heat removes winter moisture.
As high as practical and spread across the roof rather than clustered — usually on the western or south-western slope so they catch the afternoon sea breeze. On a complex roofline with separate sections, units may need to go on more than one face to cover the whole cavity.
Not necessarily, though most people are. Dave will talk through placement before starting, and the job typically takes one to two hours. Access to the roof is all that is strictly needed.
