Whirlybirds and Solar Vents in Mount Pleasant
Dave's Whirly Birds covers Mount Pleasant 6153 and the surrounding City of Melville area. Mount Pleasant sits about 9km south of the Perth CBD, and every job here is quoted at a fixed price up front and completed by Dave personally.
Mount Pleasant sits about 9km from the coast, so the sea breeze arrives later in the afternoon and with noticeably less punch than it has closer to the water. Turbines still contribute, but there is a hot, still window through the middle of the day where they do very little.
Most of what Dave works on in Mount Pleasant is post-war brick and tile. Post-war brick-and-tile homes typically run a low-to-medium pitch with a modest eave overhang. Roof cavities are shallow, which means they heat up fast and transfer that heat down to the ceiling quickly.
Insulation in these houses is frequently original, thin, or has settled and gone patchy over decades. Ventilation will not fix poor insulation, but it does stop the cavity above it acting as a heat store all evening — which is usually the complaint that prompts the call.
Most homes in Mount Pleasant need 3 whirlybirds, which comes to $950 supplied and installed. The shallow cavity on a post-war roof heats right through in an afternoon.

Inland — late afternoon breeze
Why Solar Vents Often Win in Mount Pleasant
This is where the advice changes. In Mount Pleasant the sea breeze arrives late enough that wind-driven turbines miss the worst of the heat — your roof cavity peaks in the early afternoon, and the Doctor often does not turn up until after that.
A solar vent runs on sunlight instead, so it is at full output precisely when the roof is hottest. One unit at $750 typically moves more air than three turbines at $950, and it does not care whether the wind is blowing.
That said, plenty of Mount Pleasant homes do perfectly well on whirlybirds alone — particularly smaller single-storey places with well-vented eaves. A common middle path here is one solar vent doing the heavy lifting plus a couple of turbines contributing whenever the breeze is up. Dave will tell you which of the three makes sense for your roof rather than defaulting to the dearest option.

FAQ
Whirlybird Installation Mount Pleasant — Common Questions
From $350 for a single unit supplied and installed. Two units are $650, three are $950, and each unit after that adds $300. Travel to Mount Pleasant 6153 is included and there is no call-out fee.
Two to three units suits most homes of this size and vintage. The general rule is one 300mm unit per 50–60m² of ceiling area, adjusted for pitch and how much intake venting the eaves provide. Dave works out the exact number from your details before quoting.
This is the honest weak point for wind-driven units in Mount Pleasant. The sea breeze arrives late here, so there is a hot, still window through the middle of the day where a turbine does very little. If that bothers you, a solar vent from $750 runs regardless of wind.
Yes — replacements start from $350 per unit. That covers removing the old roof vent, fitting new flashing, installing the new unit and taking the old one away. Most swaps reuse the existing roof penetration, so they take about 30–45 minutes each.
