Southern River is roughly 17km from the coast, which puts it well outside the reliable sea-breeze belt. Summer afternoons here run hotter and stiller than anywhere on the coastal plain, and a wind-driven turbine can sit motionless through the worst of it.

The roof stock in Southern River is mainly newer estate housing, a lot of it Colorbond. Newer estate homes are the hardest case in Perth, and it is worth being blunt about why. Dark Colorbond roofs absorb far more heat than light tile, blocks are smaller so homes are built out to the boundary with wide footprints, and eaves are frequently narrow or boxed in entirely.

That combination gives you a roof cavity that gets extremely hot and has almost no natural intake. Adding extraction alone will underperform — the fix usually involves getting intake air in as well, which is cheaper than most people expect.
