Whirlybirds and Solar Vents in Atwell

Atwell is far enough inland — about 7km — that the sea breeze is a softer, later arrival. Wind-driven units are not useless here, but they are working fewer effective hours than the same units bolted to a roof on the coast.

Housing through Atwell is dominated by 1990s brick and tile, much of it double storey. Homes from this decade are larger and frequently double storey, which concentrates the heat complaint upstairs. Anything with bedrooms directly under the roof will feel the difference from ventilation most sharply.

The rooflines are rarely simple. Multiple planes and changes of direction mean the cavity is often effectively divided, so spreading units across sections beats clustering them on the biggest face.

Why Solar Vents Often Win in Atwell

This is where the advice changes. In Atwell the sea breeze arrives late enough that wind-driven turbines miss the worst of the heat — your roof cavity peaks in the early afternoon, and the Doctor often does not turn up until after that.

A solar vent runs on sunlight instead, so it is at full output precisely when the roof is hottest. One unit at $750 typically moves more air than three turbines at $950, and it does not care whether the wind is blowing.

That said, plenty of Atwell homes do perfectly well on whirlybirds alone — particularly smaller single-storey places with well-vented eaves. A common middle path here is one solar vent doing the heavy lifting plus a couple of turbines contributing whenever the breeze is up.
