Whirlybirds and Solar Vents in Bassendean
Dave's Whirly Birds covers Bassendean 6054 and the surrounding Town of Bassendean area. Bassendean sits about 10km north-east of the Perth CBD, and every job here is quoted at a fixed price up front and completed by Dave personally.
18km inland puts Bassendean at the far edge of the sea breeze's reach. Hot, still afternoons are the norm through summer here, and that is precisely the condition wind-driven whirlybirds handle worst.
Bassendean is largely character homes with steep tiled roofs. Steep old rooflines mean deep cavities, and deep cavities stratify: the air directly under the ridge can be ten degrees hotter than the air near the eaves. Units mounted high capture that layer, which is why placement matters more on these homes than on a flat modern roof.
Renovations are the complication. Boxed-in eaves, new lined soffits and enclosed verandah returns all cut off the intake path that the house was originally designed around. Getting air in is frequently the cheaper half of the fix.
The usual answer in Bassendean is 4 whirlybirds, $1,250 all up. A steep character roof holds a lot more hot air than the floor area suggests.

Why Bassendean Roofs Usually Want Solar
Bassendean is about as far from the coast as Dave works, and it shows up in two ways: summer roof temperatures run higher than on the coastal plain, and the wind is much less dependable. Those are the exact conditions where wind-driven whirlybirds disappoint people.
Solar vents are usually the better buy here. From $750 installed, a solar unit runs whenever there is sun on the panel — which out this way is most of the day, most of the summer — and shifts several times the air a turbine manages.
Whirlybirds still have a place in Bassendean as a cheap supplement, or on smaller homes where the ceiling area is modest. What Dave will not do is sell you five turbines for a roof that needs one powered unit.

FAQ
Whirlybird Installation Bassendean — Common Questions
From $350 for a single unit supplied and installed. Two units are $650, three are $950, and each unit after that adds $300. Travel to Bassendean 6054 is included and there is no call-out fee.
Steep pitch means more cavity volume per square metre of ceiling, so these homes often want one more unit than the floor area alone suggests. The general rule is one 300mm unit per 50–60m² of ceiling area, adjusted for pitch and how much intake venting the eaves provide. Dave works out the exact number from your details before quoting.

Salt corrosion is not really a Bassendean problem — you are far enough inland that units generally fail from worn bearings or storm damage rather than rust. That usually means 12–15 years from a quality unit.
This is the honest weak point for wind-driven units in Bassendean. The sea breeze arrives late here, so there is a hot, still window through the middle of the day where a turbine does very little. If that bothers you, a solar vent from $750 runs regardless of wind.
Yes — replacements start from $350 per unit. That covers removing the old roof vent, fitting new flashing, installing the new unit and taking the old one away. Most swaps reuse the existing roof penetration, so they take about 30–45 minutes each.
